Entwined hearts, carved by hand in Ancaster limestone and finished with gold enamel paint.

Although not quarried there, the stone was sourced from Lincoln Cathedral’s quarry on Riseholme Road in Lincoln.

Ancaster stone was used by the cathedral when the bed heights of Lincoln were insufficient; Lincoln bed heights were limited to around 11 inches at their Riseholme Road location.

The stone is geologically the same as Lincoln, a Middle Jurassic limestone from the Inferior Oolite Series, formed approximately 165 million years ago.

Unlike the Lincoln limestone, Ancaster is quarried commercially and has been used as a building stone all across the country. It’s uses range from flooring to fireplaces, and small private dwellings to grand public buildings.

As with the Lincoln limestone, the pieces available here are off cuts. Please study the pictures carefully as any chips and irregularities seen aren’t defects; they are part of the character of the stone.
